Music video director David LaChapelle's directorial feature debut, RIZE, is a street-level documentary about a little-known dance subculture that began in south central Los Angeles in the early '90s called 'krumping.' Originated by a street performer nicknamed Tommy the Clown (partially in response to the L.A. Riots after the Rodney King trial), krumping is amazingly physical and athletic street dancing that's often performed to music that's been speeded up or otherwise manipulated to match the hyper-fast moves. The music on the RIZE soundtrack hasn't been toyed with in that fashion, but the original material by Flii Stylz focuses entirely on the beat, as does the Christina Aguilera remix, and an entry by UK hip-hop star Dizzee Rascal ('Fix Up, Look Sharp,' based on the beat from Billy Squier's 'The Stroke'). The inclusion of a number of traditional gospel songs, such as the Edwin Hawkins Singers' familiar 'Oh Happy Day,' makes less sense to those who haven't seen the movie, but they're a surprisingly comfortable musical fit, rounding out this compelling, energetic soundtrack.
